American Numismatic Society Called for Applications to Its 2026 Graduate Summer Seminar

The ANS announced the 70th Eric P. Newman Graduate Summer Seminar in Numismatics, a summer program that introduces graduate students to the study of coins, currency and monetary history. The seminar runs from June 1 to July 24, 2026, in New York City.
The program has run since 1952. According to the ANS, its graduate students include people who became prominent archaeologists, classicists, historians and art historians. Each year a scholar who works with numismatic material serves as the Eric P. Newman Visiting Scholar. The 2026 Visiting Scholar is Professor William Bubelis of Washington University in St. Louis.
The program
The seminar is an eight-week intensive program. ANS staff and guest scholars teach numismatic methods, theories and history through lectures, seminars and workshops.
Each student pursues a research project on a numismatic topic, mentored by ANS curators and academic staff or by the visiting scholar. Students have access to more than 100,000 volumes in the library and 800,000 objects in the numismatic collection. The ANS says the project often results in peer-reviewed publication.
Eligibility and dates
The seminar is open to doctoral students or candidates in History, Art History, Archaeology, Classics, Literature, Digital Humanities and related fields. Master's students with strong academic credentials may also be considered. The ANS can accept only U.S. citizens, permanent residents and international students studying at U.S. institutions with eligible visas. Prior experience in numismatics is not required.
Applications opened on November 24, 2025. The deadline for applications, letters of recommendation and supporting documents was February 28, 2026, and candidates were to be notified by March 15, 2026. A limited number of stipends of up to $3,000 are available for living and travel expenses.
The seminar's director is Dr. Lucia Carbone, Andrew M. Burnett Associate Curator of Roman Coins at the ANS.
