Dad's Root Beer Bottle Caps With Cents Shared on CoinTalk

A Cent in a Bottle Cap

A member called "Collecting Nut" shared a Dad's Root Beer bottle cap with a cent set inside it. According to the poster, Dad's Root Beer was founded in 1937, and this was what the company did to promote it. The first cap shown was described by the poster as being from the company's first year of production. The poster then showed another one from 1953.

The poster wrote that these were in a small collection the poster bought for a very low price, and that the poster had never seen or heard of such caps before.

Other Members' Reactions

Several members said they had never seen one before. One member, who said they were 78, wrote that this was the first they had seen of these and that they had checked a listing on eBay. Another wrote that they had never seen an encased cent in a bottle cap like that.

Another member noted that the cent appeared to be on the inside of the cap and asked whether it had been exposed to the root beer, whether the drink's acidity would degrade the cent, and whether there were health and liability issues. The thread does not contain an answer to these questions.
