The two-week preorder window for the United States Mint's 2026 Freedom 250 Race Medal was scheduled to close on Friday, Sept. 4, 2026, at 3 p.m. ET. The medal is priced at $60.

Made to demand, up to 15,000
Unlike most Mint products, the medal is produced to demand from orders placed during the preorder window, up to a maximum of 15,000. The Mint has said no additional medals will be struck after the window closes.
Opening sales reached 5,105 medals. Another 3,137 were added in the latest weekly report, bringing the total to 8,242 through Aug. 30, or 54.9% of the maximum mintage. Based on the sales pace through Thursday, CoinNews said roughly 3,500 medals might remain available before Friday's cutoff.
Design and specifications
The obverse shows an Indy car inscribed USA alongside the U.S. Capitol, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and FREEDOM 250 around the design. The reverse carries a portrait of Penske with MOTORSPORT PIONEER and ROGER PENSKE.
The medal is struck at the Philadelphia Mint with a matte finish. It is clad and matches the size, weight and composition of a U.S. half dollar. It measures 1.205 inches in diameter and has a plain edge. Each piece is encapsulated and housed in a U.S. Mint presentation box. Shipping is expected to begin Sept. 28.
