Debate on Cleaned Coins Reveals Numismatic Market Risks
Cleaned coins seem cheap but carry resale risks in the antique coin market. Insights from Louis Iudiciani reveal market perceptions on these coins and investment pitfalls in numismatics.
Changes in Collector Preferences Over Time
During the 1960s and 1970s, coin collectors were more accepting of cleaned coins. According to Numismatic News, nearly all of the Seated Liberty Dollars they recently examined showed evidence of cleaning, including examples from 1851 and 1852. These coins were described as "glowing" due to the cleaning process.
Assessment of Cleaned Coins and Modern Perspectives
In that era, collectors prioritized the date, design, and mint mark over minor imperfections caused by cleaning. Today, however, cleaned coins generally face disadvantages in resale value. Many collectors express that they would avoid purchasing them, citing poor market valuation and the potential necessity to sell at a discounted price.
Exceptions Among Cleaned Coins
Nevertheless, certain exceptions do exist even today. Rare coins, particularly those from early U.S. mints dating between 1793 and the 1820s, may still be highly valued if they maintain their aesthetic appeal. An 1806 half coin, noted for its exceptionally beautiful toning post-cleaning, serves as one such example. For collectors, such coins can be appealing, and they can utilize the cleaning to their advantage.
Although not quantifiable through numbers or dates, it is evident that a coin’s value continues to evolve alongside the standards of collectors. The modern assessment of cleaned coins doesn't always align with past perspectives, necessitating careful consideration before purchase.
