1958 Nickel with Proof-Like Appearance Found in a Roll

A coin collector posted photos of a 1958 Philadelphia-minted Jefferson Nickel they discovered in a roll, stating that the coin "looks almost like a proof."

In response, community members discussed the possibility of it being a proof coin. One member noted that the Philadelphia Mint was producing proof coins in that year. They explained that it could be a proof if it had the characteristic luster, sharpness of detail, thick and square rims, and full details on the steps of Monticello.

Further Photos Suggest the Coin Is Not a Proof

Some members commented that it was difficult to make a definitive judgment from the initial photos. One observed that "the Monticello looks a little soft for a proof," while another suggested retaking the photos with less direct lighting.

The original poster then shared new pictures, concluding after examining the coin in hand, "I don't think it's a proof." However, they added that it has "a mirror-like surface" and is in exceptional condition for a coin found in a roll.

After seeing the new images, other members agreed that while it was not a proof, it was a very sharp strike. One opinion suggested it is a "very nice PL (Proof-Like)" example, likely struck from fresh dies and saved shortly after its release. Still, a few voices insisted, "That's a proof. Get it graded!"

How Older Coins Are Found in Uncirculated Condition

The discovery also raised the question of how older coins are sometimes found in nearly Uncirculated (MS) condition.

One member explained that such coins often originate from someone's collection and are found before they have been in general circulation for long. Once a coin enters circulation, even briefly, it quickly acquires scratches and loses its luster.

Ultimately, the 1958 nickel was praised by many in the community as an "excellent find for a roll."
