$5,000 Bounty Reveals Sourcing Crisis: Why Top US Dealers Hunt Rare Proof Dollars

Virginia coin dealer DLRC (formerly David Lawrence Rare Coins) has acquired a rare 1848 Seated Liberty Dollar, paying a $5,000 bounty to Kaden Dohr for his role in the discovery. The bounty was awarded at the FUN Show held in Orlando, Florida, in January 2026.

Three Proof Silver Dollars Missing from the D.L. Hansen Collection

In August 2025, DLRC announced a bounty for three proof silver dollars needed to complete the renowned D.L. Hansen Collection.

The coins sought were proof silver dollars dated 1801, 1841, and 1848, which were the only missing pieces in the collection's proof dollar set. After a search spanning more than six years, one of these coins has now been located for the first time.

$5,000 Bounty Paid as 1848 Proof Dollar Joins Collection

The newly acquired coin is a Seated Liberty Dollar dated 1848. It has been graded Proof 62 by PCGS.

Kaden Dohr, who assisted in the discovery, received the $5,000 bounty upon DLRC's acquisition of the coin. The coin is now part of the D.L. Hansen Collection.

Search Continues with $5,000 Bounties for 1801 and 1841 Dollars

While the 1848 dollar has been found, the search continues for the two remaining coins: the 1801 and 1841 proof silver dollars.

DLRC is still offering a $5,000 bounty for the discovery of each of these coins. To be eligible for the bounty, specimens must be graded or stickered by CAC. Information can be sent to DLRC via email at [email protected].

Curator Discusses the Relentless Pursuit to Complete the Collection

John Brush, President of DLRC and curator of the D.L. Hansen Collection, commented:

"The main set of the D.L. Hansen Collection, the ‘U.S. Regular Issue Coin Collection from 1792 to Present,’ is complete, with the exception of the 1822 $5 gold piece, of which only one is available to collectors. However, we can further enhance this famous collection by adding proof and variety specimens."

Brush stated that he is always looking for rare coins to fill gaps in the collection and expressed his excitement about this new addition and his hope for finding the remaining two. He also noted that the Hansen Collection is constantly being upgraded and added to, and encourages people to contact them with any coins they believe would be suitable for the collection.
