A Collector's Relay Game: Post the Same Type or Year

A “relay game” with a simple rule was proposed in an online collector community: post a coin of the same type or year as the previous person’s post.

According to one poster, the game works as follows. If the first person posts a 1936 Washington Quarter, the next person continues the relay by posting either another Washington Quarter of any year or a different coin from 1936.

The proposal immediately drew responses from other members.

A “Wild Card” to Change the Flow

A special rule was added to make the game more interesting: the “wild card.”

Posting a medal with the same year as the previous coin functions as a wild card. The next poster is then not bound by the coin’s type or year and can start a new sequence with any coin they choose. This was explained as a way to make it easier for more people to participate.

After the game began, some participants misunderstood the rules and posted unrelated coins. Other members gently corrected the course, suggesting they “read post #1” or carefully re-explaining the rules.

A Similar Game Running Since 2006

This game format is not entirely new.

One participant pointed out that a similar game on another forum has been running since May 30, 2006, reaching 184 pages, 3,678 posts, and 93,581 views.

In the thread, an elongated cent with the year 1919 and a 1947 Washington Quarter were posted, continuing the relay.

One participant received the following clarification on the rules: “You cannot post a medal as a wild card and then post the next coin in the same post.”
