CoinTalk Member Posts a Conder Half Penny Token With a Beehive Design
On the coin collectors' forum CoinTalk, member mrweaseluv posted a Condor (Conder) half penny token that the member thinks dates from 1794. The member described searching for matching designs, and other members replied with their own beehive tokens and comments on reference books. The token
Member mrweaseluv posted a newly acquired Condor half penny token (the thread title spells it "Condor"; other members write "Conder"). In the title, the member wrote that the token is from 1794, adding "I think."
The member wrote that near exact versions of both the obverse and the reverse could be found, both attributed to Cheshire, but that the edge lettering says Lancaster, so the search continued. The member had not yet found the exact token on Numista or other sources, and said that not having a good Condor book did not help.
The member wrote that the token looked pretty good in the pictures and that, if it is real, "I finaly got a beehive." In an update, the member reported finding it on "the purple penny."
Replies
Tall Paul congratulated the member on getting a Conder beehive and wrote of having a sub-suite of tokens that depict beehives. The member showed a few: a Conder token from Cambridgeshire (D&H #12, MS-63 BN), a Civil War patriotic token (Fuld 188/435e, MS-61, R-8) and a French jeton (MS-63), and wrote, "This is my oldest bee."
Collecting Nut called it "a really nice piece" and offered congratulations. BRandM wrote that Conders are an interesting area of collecting, much like HTTs, and called the posted token "very nice."
Reference books
mrweaseluv wrote of owning Fuld's "Patriotic Civil War Tokens" and looking up Tall Paul's token there, and of needing a good Condor book, at least the D&H, though such books are not cheap.
Tall Paul agreed that the D&H book is expensive but said it is worth it, especially since collecting Conder tokens can be addicting. BRandM replied that this is why BRandM never started collecting them: the member gets hooked on different issues and cannot let go until the money runs out.
