CoinTalk Member Reports Completing a Nickel Book From Circulation, a Search Begun in 2014
On the CoinTalk forum, a member posting as NLL reported completing a nickel book begun in 2014. NLL wrote that the 1943-D had been found in January and the 1938-S in the week before the post; the source does not give the date of the post. A Book Begun in 2014
A member posting as NLL wrote that a journey that started in 2014 "finally came to an end this past week." NLL said the 1943-D was found in January and the 1938-S was found this past week.
When another member, lordmarcovan, asked whether all the coins came from circulation, including the '50-D, NLL replied, "Yes even the 50 d." NLL added that in the last couple of months they had found a '50-D, two '38-Ds, a '38-S, four '39s and two '43-Ds.
Searching by the Box
NLL said they had about 20 boxes "collecting dust" that they began going through in November, after getting off crutches, and from mid-December picked up a few boxes a week to try to finish the book. Besides those boxes, NLL said they looked through "maybe another 30 fresh cases." The original wording, "since December 12 of which were all brand new 2023 or 2025," can be read as cases searched since December that were all brand new 2023 or 2025 coins, as "since December 12," or as 12 of the roughly 30 cases being all brand new 2023 or 2025 coins. NLL wrote, "I'd consider myself lucky to have found what I found."
NLL called the '43-D "a hard one to get," saying many people pull the silver ones first, which makes it harder to find.
Other Members' Experiences
Joe Campbell wrote that they were also in the "have pulled a complete set of Jeff's from circulation" club, and that the 43-D was their last one needed as well. Mr. Flute said they completed a set in early 2014 after starting in 2011, and found two 50-Ds in circulation before finding the last one needed, a 39-D. Inspector43 wrote of having a complete set from circulation, started in 1948.
A Question About Other Books
Later in the thread, NLL asked, "Has anyone here been able to fill out a silver Roosevelt book from circulation or any other books?" SensibleSal66 replied, "No, I haven't." Kevin Mader wrote that they keep circulation finds separate from purchased coins and were able to complete sets of Jefferson, "but that's about it."
In later replies, Joe Campbell wrote, "I'm about 4 coins short," and NLL wrote, "I'm now 6 coins short. It's a hard book to complete." The source does not make clear which book these replies refer to. Both were posted after that question.
