American Numismatic Society to Move From New York to Toledo, Ohio, in First Half of 2028

In a release dated November 20, 2025, the American Numismatic Society (ANS) announced that it will move its headquarters from New York City to Toledo, Ohio, where it will be based on the campus of the Toledo Museum of Art (TMA). The move is scheduled for the first half of 2028.

The announcement

The ANS, an organization of nearly 170 years dedicated to coins, currency and medals, says it holds the most comprehensive collection of numismatic objects in the United States.

It currently leases space at 75 Varick Street in New York City. The ANS says the relocation will let it better serve its American and international audiences and build a strong relationship with the local community.

"The American Numismatic Society's move to Toledo marks a transformative new chapter in our long history," said Dr. Ute Wartenberg Kagan, the Society's Sydney F. Martin Executive Director. She said the ANS plans new museum displays with the Toledo Museum of Art and stronger academic partnerships with local universities.

The new building

The new home is a four-story Art Deco building next to the museum, acquired from TMA. It will include a museum hall and gallery spaces, a library, an auditorium and an Education Center. The ANS says many objects in its collection have never been publicly displayed.

The collection includes nearly 800,000 coins, monetary objects, art medals, military orders and decorations, and the ANS says it ranks among the top four of its kind worldwide. More than 100,000 objects were added in the past twenty years, including the archives of the Medallic Art Company, acquired in 2017.

Partnership with the museum

Under a new institutional partnership, objects from the ANS collection will be placed in several of TMA's permanent collection galleries. Those galleries are being reinstalled in chronological order, with the unveiling planned for late 2027.

"We could not be more excited as a Museum or as a community to welcome the American Numismatic Society to the city as our neighbor," said Adam Levine, TMA's President, Director and CEO.

The ANS also intends to work with other local organizations. It says it plans to hold events its current New York facilities cannot support, such as major academic conferences and hands-on programs on how money works.

Figures from the release

According to the release, TMA welcomes more than 300,000 visitors to its campus each year, and Detroit Metro Airport is less than an hour away. The release also states that there are approximately 150 million people interested in collecting coins and money in the U.S.
