Vatican Shows Designs of Its Two 2026 Commemorative 2-Euro Coins

On August 21, 2026, the Spanish coin website Numismática Visual described the designs of the two commemorative 2-euro coins that Vatican City will issue in 2026. One honors the Magisterium (teaching) of Pope Leo XIV; the other marks the 400th anniversary of St. Peter's Basilica. The images were published by the Governatorato of Vatican City State itself.

"Magisterium of Pope Leo XIV"

The coin is listed in the official coin program as "Magistero di Papa Leone XIV." It will be issued in both FDC (Fior di Conio) and proof (Fondo Specchio) quality.

The design shows a child standing before a warrior in armor, with a sword at the center. "CITTÀ DEL VATICANO" runs along the left, the year 2026 is at the bottom, and an "R" marks the Rome mint.

In the article where it published the image, the Governatorato said several 2026 issues will be dedicated to the Pope's Magisterium and that one upcoming commemorative 2-euro coin will recall the call for "a disarmed and disarming peace."

The phrase is tied to the start of Leo XIV's pontificate. On May 8, 2025, minutes after his election, Robert Francis Prevost appeared for the first time as Pope on the central loggia of St. Peter's Basilica and began his first message by speaking about peace. He later chose the phrase as the theme of his message for the 59th World Day of Peace on January 1, 2026.

No official description of the design has been published yet. Numismática Visual notes that in the World Day of Peace message the Pope said "goodness is disarming" and turned to childhood, and writes that the scene of a child facing an armed man appears to express that contrast. This is the website's reading. It says the official presentation is needed to know whether the figures depict specific people or are only symbolic.

400 Years of St. Peter's Basilica

The second coin marks the 400th anniversary of St. Peter's Basilica. It is also in the official program and will be sold in FDC and proof versions.

At the center, the Pope takes part in a religious ceremony with members of the clergy. The Latin inscription "S. PETRI BASILICA CONSECRATA" (St. Peter's Basilica consecrated) surrounds the scene. The dates 1626 – 2026 appear in the exergue, the Rome mint mark "R" sits above the scene, and the twelve stars of the European flag fill the outer ring.

The Governatorato said its collaboration with the Fabbrica di San Pietro will produce two coins linked to the anniversary, and that one of them will revive a 17th-century medal made to commemorate the event.

The Urban VIII Medal

According to Numismática Visual, the new design matches a well-known medal type from the pontificate of Pope Urban VIII (1623-1644), whose reverse shows the Pope with his court at the ceremony and the same legend, "S. PETRI BASILICA CONSECRATA." The type is associated with the medalist Gaspare Mola.

The Governatorato has not yet said which historical piece served as the model for the 2026 coin.

Construction of the present basilica began in 1506 under Pope Julius II, and Urban VIII consecrated it on November 18, 1626. Celebrations run through 2026 and will end on November 18, 2026, with a Mass celebrated by Leo XIV.

Silver 25-Euro Coins

The official program also includes a colored silver 25-euro coin for each of the two themes. The one for Leo XIV's Magisterium is rectangular.

The Governatorato calls 2026 a "moment of profound transformation" for Vatican coinage. The Pope's portrait returns to the regular coins; Pope Francis replaced his effigy with his coat of arms in 2017.

Known Specifications and Open Questions

Both coins weigh 8.50 g, measure 25.75 mm in diameter and 2.20 mm thick, and are struck by the Rome mint. Mintages, issue dates, sale prices and the names of the designers have not been announced.
